Grows In: Malaysia
Hardness: 1640

DESCRIPTION
Balau is a very dense tightly grained wood that is heavily laden with rich tropical oils and resins. Balau’s texture is very fine and even. The grain is interlocked, often giving rise to faint stripe figure: texture is moderately fine and even.

COLOUR RANGE
The appeal of Yellow Balau is its resemblance in color and grain to Teak, although at a much lower cost. It’s sapwood is moderately well defined and lighter in colour than heartwood. Resin canals usually with white contents, occur characteristically in concentric lines on the end surface but the wood is not resinous.

COLOUR CHANGE
The colour of freshly cut heartwood is yellow-brown, or brown with reddish tinge, weathering ultimately to a deeper shade of brown or reddish dark brown.
